After Effects Tip: Center Anchor Point Keyboard Shortcut

In After Effects, the Center Anchor Point refers to the pivot point or the center point of a layer. It affects how the layer would behave in terms of its transformations, such as scaling, position, or rotation. In this post, I will show you how to center one or multiple anchor points with a simple keyboard shortcut. Let’s dive right in!

I have a simple setup for this After Effects project. As always, I have my UKRAMEDIA.COM text, the circular shape layer, and the background.

After Effects Simple Set up

Let’s select the UKRAMEDIA.COM text layer first. And as you can see, my anchor point is way off.

So how do I put this anchor point in the center of my text? Good question! The solution is very simple. We have a  few options. We can either hit Y on the keyboard and manually drag it to the center of our layer.

We can even use the Snapping Tool to snap it in the center. It is a great solution. However, it has one too many steps. There is an easier way to accomplish the same thing with fewer steps.

All we have to do is just select the text layer we want, then hit CTRL+ALT+HOME on a PC/COMMAND+OPTION+HOME on a MAC, and it will automatically snap our anchor point to the center of our text. That simple!

My favorite part about this shortcut is that we can apply it to multiple layers at the same time. It is a timesaver! For example, right now have six layers selected.

As you can see, all of the layers have anchor points all over the place. To center them, all we have to do is just select them and use the same keyboard shortcut CTRL+ALT+HOME on a PC/COMMAND+OPTION+HOME on a MAC.

When we do that, all the anchor points will snap to the center of each object.

A YouTuber who goes by username StereolimitStudio told me of another way of centering an anchor point in After Effects that I didn’t know existed. And this one is quite simple. First, select your logo, hold down CTRL on your keyboard and double click on this Anchor Point Tool. When you do that, the anchor point goes right to the center of your object.
